Snack Attack

I’ve always been quite the snacker.  I eat constantly throughout the day, small meals and frequent snacks.  In fact, one of the first fights hubs and I got into when we moved in together was over snacks.  Hubs rarely snacks and as we were grocery shopping he was getting annoyed at all of the over priced bagel chips and fruit roll ups I was throwing into the cart.  And then I got mad at him for being such a mom.

Hubs now does all of our grocery shopping alone.  Womp womp.

Recently I’ve been feeling the negative effects of my unhealthy snacks (generally chips or cheetos) and sitting at a desk for ten hours a day.  Over the weekend I was telling my sob story to my dietitian friend Diana (find her amazing blog Organic Antics here).

She was all, “Why don’t you snack on things like carrots and grapes and apples?”

Carrots?  Grapes?  Apples?  I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time I had a carrot, a grape or an apple.  And it seriously took her telling me that that’s what I should have for a snack for me to realize that snacks aren’t just things that come out of vending machines.

So I headed to our local market and bought a ton of fruits and veggies and brought them all to work.  And every time I’ve been hungry this week I grabbed a healthy snack out of the fridge.

The result?  I’ve felt better than I have in a long time.  I don’t find myself wanting soda as frequently (I’m a huge Pepsi addict) and I don’t feel like I’m going to fall asleep come 2 o’clock.

It’s amazing what a little bit of healthy snacking can do for you.  Now if only I could give up my Lucky Charms breakfast habit…
